Sewing for the Seams Fabric Sew-a-long: January
I am lucky to have a wonderful independent fabric shop in my local area. Seams Sewing and Mercantile in East Lansing, MI carries quality fabrics, sewing patterns from small and independent companies. They also have a growing selection of vintage fabrics. If you’re ever passing through mid-Michigan, you should definitely stop in for some fabric, then go across the street for a cup of coffee.
This year, Seams announced that they would be hosting a sew-a-long each month. I think this is such a fun way to engage the local sewing community, but literally anyone can participate by following the shop online. Seams has been posting really great instructions and tips along the way.
The Scout Tee by Grainline Studio
The first project in January caught my eye because it was a t-shirt that looked quick and simple to make. The Scout Tee by Grainline Studio is a beginner level sewing pattern that calls for woven fabric instead of a knit jersey material.
What I love about this pattern is that it has no bust darts! This means that this style will fit a wide variety of different body types and shapes. The fit is roomy enough to fit comfortable, but not feel like you’re wearing pajamas.
I really love finding patterns that are so easy to fit different body types. Especially if you’ve had a single mastectomy or if you often have irregular fit issues with sewing patterns, this pattern would be a great addition to your collection. It’s basic design makes it easy to adjust if needed.
My Scout Tee
For my tee, I used a daisy print cotton voile called Flower Glory Evening by Art Gallery Fabrics. (I saw Seams post it online and knew I wanted this print right away.) This fabric feels so light, airy and soft. It’s lovely wear.
I was able to save on fabric by using a gate-fold when I cut out my pieces instead of the recommended selvedge-to-selvedge fold. I actually have enough fabric left over to make a skirt or even another tee!
I can’t wait for spring to arrive so I can start wearing this tee everywhere. Since it’s such a quick and comfy make, I think I will make a few more Scout Tees in preparation for the warmer weather ahead!
I really love how this top fits me, but I can’t figure out if I like it better tucked or untucked. What do you think?
Overall, this sewing pattern was easy to follow and simple to make. One afternoon of sewing resulted in a top that makes me feel super happy when I wear it. I definitely recommend giving this Grainline Studio patten a try.
