I’ve been a knitter for years now, but I’ve never really picked up crochet skills. In fact, the first time teenaged me attempted to crochet, it ended in tears of defeat. I’ve beens seeing so many cute crochet projects around the web lately. I decided it’s high time for me to finally learn!

I had some random sizes of crochet hooks on hand, plus some Bernat Roving Yarn in my stash that felt like it would make up a nice cowl. I really love how soft this yarn feels, and how it smells like pure wool even though it is a wool blend yarn. I think working with a single strand yarn was a good choice for a beginner project.

I searched for a few YouTube videos on how to do a basic chain and crochet stitch.

Before long I had made a pretty sizable rectangular piece of fabric with my hook and yarn. I stitched either short end together to form one big tube and voila! My first crochet project was complete!

Now that I’ve figured out basics of crochet, I’m excited to branch out to other techniques. I’d love to add some crochet edging to my knitting projects, or make a crochet bikini top for this summer!

I need to practice a bit more to keep the tension of my stitches more uniform. If you are a more experienced with crocheting, leave me a comment below. I would love to hear your crochet tips!
